Is AI engineering a completely different discipline from software engineering? Not really — it's a specialization within it. If you want to be a good AI engineer, most of your job is traditional software engineering work that just happens to interact with an AI model at some point.
So if you're thinking becoming an AI engineer means you can skip all the software engineering fundamentals, that's completely wrong. You still need to set up APIs, build backend services, write tests, do code reviews, and manage deployments.
The AI part sits on top of real engineering skills.
